Seeking Solutions

Mapping Out Real-World Approaches to Renewal

It is one thing to acknowledge the need for infrastructure renewal; it is quite another to develop and implement solutions that can achieve even a fraction of the renewal needed. Particularly given the scarcity of resources that currently are available to fund such renewal, efforts to address the known needs run a considerable risk of failing to meet appropriate standards for resiliency, sustainability, efficiency, environmental sensitivity and adaptability, and the prioritization, siting, design and operation of new and renewed infrastructure are likely to suffer from lack of consideration of basic principles of social justice, equity and inclusiveness.

Trump Administration Infrastructure Plans

On February 12, 2018, President Donald J. Trump announced his Legislative Outline for Rebuilding Infrastructure in America, which sets out the Administration’s framework for American infrastructure renewal. The Administration plan seeks Congressional action on an infrastructure bill to stimulate at least $1.5 trillion in new investment over the next 10 years, shorten the process for approving projects to 2 years or less, address unmet rural infrastructure needs, empower State and local authorities, and train the American workforce of the future. The plan lays out four broad areas of focus: funding and financing infrastructure improvements; additional legislative actions to infrastructure improvements; infrastructure permitting improvement; and workforce development.

The full Administration infrastructure plan and related Administration pronouncements and materials in support of the Administration’s infrastructure goals are provided below:

Private Sector Infrastructure Approaches

Non-governmental private sector parties participate in the design, construction, operation and/or funding of many aspects of the American infrastructure. While certain aspects of this private sector participation are currently touched on throughout the AIRRC website, we expect to update this page in the near future to catalogue in an organized manner third-party resources directed toward private sector involvement and opportunities in infrastructure renewal. Check back soon.
